Typing Speed: What WPM Really Means and How to Improve It

Typing speed is quoted in words per minute, but a "word" in this context is not a word at all. Understanding how the number is produced explains why two tests give you different results, and why chasing the number is usually the wrong way to raise it.

How WPM Is Calculated

The standard defines a word as five characters, including spaces. This normalisation exists because real words vary from one letter to fifteen, and counting them directly would make the score depend on the text rather than the typist.

Gross WPM = (total characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed

Typing 300 characters in one minute is therefore 60 gross WPM. But gross speed ignores mistakes, so the meaningful figure is net:

Net WPM = gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes)

Each uncorrected error costs a full word from the score. Some tests instead report accuracy as a percentage of correct keystrokes, and many combine both. Context changes these numbers considerably. Copy typing from a displayed text is faster than composing your own sentences, because composition spends time on thinking rather than on keystrokes. Consider two typists over a minute. The first types 80 gross WPM with 8 errors; the second types 65 gross with 1 error. Net scores: 72 against 64 — the fast one still wins on the test. Now consider real work, where errors have to be found and fixed. Correcting a typo costs several seconds: noticing it, moving the cursor, deleting, retyping, re-reading. At eight errors a minute, the fast typist spends more time repairing than they gained.

Wrists straight and floating rather than resting, elbows near 90 degrees, screen at eye level, feet flat. This matters less for speed than for whether you can type for hours without pain — and repetitive strain injury ends more typing careers than any technique flaw.

A Practice Routine That Works

  1. Establish a baseline. Take a test and record both net WPM and accuracy. A typing test gives you both figures; retest weekly rather than daily, since day-to-day variation is larger than a week’s genuine progress.
  2. Fix technique first. If you are not touch typing, no amount of practice at your current technique will get past roughly 40 WPM.
  3. Practice accuracy deliberately. Type at 70 % of your maximum with a target of zero errors. This feels unproductive and is the fastest route to a higher ceiling.
  4. Drill your problem keys. Most people have four or five consistently weak reaches — often Q, Z, P, semicolon and the number row. Identify them from where your errors cluster and drill those specifically.

  • Key travel. Shorter travel on laptop-style keyboards can be marginally faster; longer travel is often more comfortable over hours.

For most knowledge work, thinking time dominates and the difference between 60 and 90 WPM disappears into the pauses.
