It is a tool that fixes text typed while the wrong keyboard layout was active. For example, if you typed "ghbdtn" on an English QWERTY keyboard but meant to type in Russian, the converter outputs "privet".

Text typed with the wrong layout active is not random — it is a one-to-one substitution of the intended characters, so the frequencies and letter pairs of the original language survive intact underneath. A Russian phrase typed on English keys produces a specific and quite recognizable pattern of Latin letters, different from the pattern a German or a Korean phrase would produce. The tool scores the input against each of the twelve layouts it knows and picks the reading that produces plausible words. Where two candidates come out close — short text is the hard case — you can set the direction by hand, and the keyboard map shows which physical key produced which character.

Because punctuation is where two layouts stop being a clean one-to-one map. The letter keys line up neatly — every Cyrillic letter has a Latin key it sits on — but the marks do not: a comma, a full stop, a question mark and a quotation mark can each be on a different physical key, behind a different shift state, or absent from one of the two layouts entirely. Where a character has no counterpart the conversion has nothing to substitute, so it leaves it as it stands. In practice that means the words come back correct and a handful of marks need fixing by hand, which is still faster than retyping the sentence.
