Penguin Quest — a pixel penguin game

Penguin Quest is an online pixel-art arcade in the spirit of classic 8-bit consoles. Steer a little penguin over cracks and ice holes, catch fish to keep your warmth up, and journey across a frozen wild toward a distant mountain. Each chapter changes the landscape, the light and the music, with short story scenes in between.

How to play

Steer

Use ← → (or the touch buttons) to move the penguin left and right across the ice.

Jump or dodge

Press Space or ↑ to jump cracks, holes and rocks. The walrus is tall — clear it at the top of your jump, or steer around.

Catch fish

Slide into fish to refill your warmth meter. Warmth is your time — keep it up.

Reach the mountain

Fill the progress bar to finish a chapter. Clear all chapters to reach the summit.

A real journey
Ten story chapters take Pip from the colony shore across pack ice, blizzards and the polar night to the summit — with cutscenes between them.
Warmth is your fuel
A warmth meter drains as you go and faster in the wind. Catch fish to refill it — run out and the little penguin freezes.
Two ways to play
Pseudo-3D runs toward the mountains and side-scrolling escape levels, plus an Endless mode for high scores.
Original chiptune
A 4-channel synth (two pulse, triangle and noise) plays a unique NES-style theme composed for every chapter.
Pixel art & animation
Hand-drawn sprites and smooth retro animation, with shifting light from bright day to aurora night.
Plays anywhere
Keyboard or touch controls, fullscreen support, and your progress and best score are kept in your browser.

FAQ

How do I control the penguin?

Arrow keys ← → to steer, Space or ↑ to jump, ↓ to boost. On phones and tablets, on-screen buttons appear automatically.

What is the warmth meter?

It slowly drains as you travel, faster when there is wind. Catching fish refills it. If it empties, the run ends — so fish are your fuel.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Penguin Quest runs in your web browser using HTML5 Canvas and the Web Audio API. Nothing to download.

Is the music recorded audio?

No — every theme is generated live by a small chiptune synth that emulates the classic NES sound channels, so each chapter has its own tune.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, your chapter progress and best score are stored in your browser and restored on your next visit.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Touch controls appear automatically, and you can switch to fullscreen for a bigger view.
