Video Cropping: Trim Edges and Change Aspect Ratio

Press the "TG circle" preset: it sets a square frame, 640×640 resolution and MP4 — exactly what Telegram expects from a video message. The exported file stays SQUARE, because the messenger draws the circle itself, so cutting a circle in advance is unnecessary and actually harmful. Send the result as a video message (the round one), not as a normal video: in the mobile app that needs a converter bot, everything else about the file is already right. Telegram allows one minute; if your clip is longer, the tool warns you before you export.

Crop keeps full quality but throws the sides away — good when the subject is centered, bad when two people are talking at the edges of the frame. Fit keeps everything and pads the emptiness, and a blurred background makes that padding look deliberate rather than broken. Fill zooms in until the vertical frame is covered — that is the same cutting, only the choice was made for you. When in doubt, Fit with blur loses nothing.

The ratio is the same, the decision is not. Fit shrinks the picture until it fits entirely and fills the remainder with a background — not a single pixel is lost, but the video gets smaller. Fill enlarges the picture until it covers the frame and cuts off whatever crosses the edge — full screen, but the edges are gone. The scale slider moves both: in Fit, below 100% the margin grows, and above 100% the frame starts trimming, exactly like Fill.

They mark the area that stays visible after the app draws its own interface over your clip: the status bar at the top, the caption and sound at the bottom, the avatar, likes and Share button along the side. The darkened margins are what gets covered. The overlay exists so a face, a title or a logo does not end up under the buttons. It has no effect on the export whatsoever: it is a guide on the preview and never reaches the file.

The H.264 codec works in blocks and requires even sides, so an odd width or height is rounded down by one pixel: 1081 becomes 1080. And if Resolution is set to anything other than "as is", the frame is additionally scaled so the long side lands exactly on 1080, 1440 or 2160 — the proportions are preserved, and the short side is rounded to an even number too.

Only in WebM: that container carries an alpha channel, so the corners around the circle stay transparent and the round video can be laid over another clip in an editor. MP4 supports no transparency at all, so there the corners are filled with the chosen background: black, white, your own color, or a blurred copy of the frame. The tool shows which of the two you are about to get, right under the background picker.
