What each band actually controls
The ten sliders sit at fixed frequencies. Knowing what lives at each one turns guesswork into a decision — this is the same map engineers keep in their heads.

| 32 Hz | The very bottom: rumble, vibration, room noise. Laptop and phone speakers cannot reproduce it at all. |
| 64 Hz | The foundation of kick drum and bass guitar — this is where the weight of a track comes from. |
| 125 Hz | The bottom of a male voice and the body of a snare; too much of it turns the sound boomy. |
| 250 Hz | The muddy zone: this is where the murk of a room recording piles up. |
| 500 Hz | The body of instruments; an excess makes the sound boxy, like a cardboard tube. |
| 1k Hz | The center of intelligibility — the ear is most sensitive right here. |
| 2k Hz | Consonant attack and the pluck of a string; helps a voice cut through a mix. |
| 4k Hz | Presence: the voice steps forward, but it turns harsh very easily. |
| 8k Hz | Air and sibilance — and the same place where tape and mic hiss becomes audible. |
| 16k Hz | The very top, felt rather than heard as “air”; past forty, many people no longer hear it at all. |
Practical notes
- The bands are bells, not steps: moving one also nudges its neighbors, so +6 dB at 1 kHz is audible at 800 Hz too.
- In 10-band mode the bells are wide (Q 1.4); switching to 31 bands narrows them (Q 4.32), which is what makes surgical cuts possible.
- Cutting what is in the way beats boosting what is missing: every boost eats headroom and brings clipping closer.
