Features

World, continents and regions of 214 countries
World countries, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, Oceania and the regions of any country: US states, German Länder, Indian states.
Choropleth from a table
Paste two columns from Excel — country and number. Classes split by equal count, by Jenks natural breaks or into equal intervals.
Names in 10 languages and ISO codes
“Germany,” “Deutschland,” “DE,” and “Korea, Rep.” from World Bank tables are all recognized, and rows that aren’t are listed.
Equal-area projections
Equal Earth by default keeps country areas true, so Greenland doesn’t look bigger than Africa. Robinson, Winkel tripel, Mercator and a globe are there too.
Labels that don’t collide
Country names sit in the widest part of each country, small ones are skipped instead of piling up, and the text color follows the fill.
Your work isn’t lost
The map is saved in your browser at every step, with undo and redo, and a link opens it for someone else exactly as you made it.

FAQ

How do I color a tiny country like Malta or Singapore?

Zoom in with the mouse wheel or a pinch on a phone, or type the name in “Add a country by name” and press Enter — the country takes the selected group’s color.

Why is Greenland smaller on my map than on the one at school?

By default the map uses the Equal Earth projection, which keeps areas true: Greenland is 14 times smaller than Africa. On a Mercator map it looks comparable to Africa — you can pick Mercator from the list.

How do I make a map from Excel data?

Switch to “By data” and paste two columns — the country name and a number. Names in 10 languages, ISO codes and the names used in World Bank and UN tables work. Rows that aren’t recognized are listed.

Equal count, natural breaks or equal intervals — which should I pick?

Equal count puts the same number of countries in each class, which suits skewed data such as GDP. Natural breaks look for gaps in the numbers themselves. Equal intervals split the range evenly and are the honest choice for percentages from 0 to 100.

How are disputed borders such as Crimea shown?

This version of the site shows borders recognized by the UN. The boundaries come from Natural Earth.

Can I edit the map later?

Yes: the map is saved in this browser and opens from “My work.” The “Link to the map” button stores all the coloring, so the map opens on another device and you can carry on.
