Light box for tracing on a tablet screen
An online tracing light box: the screen of a tablet or laptop lights the paper from below, the way a light pad does. A picture can be shown at its real size in centimeters or inches once the screen is calibrated with a bank card, and a picture larger than the screen is split into screen-sized tiles with an overlap and registration crosses. A photo can be turned into bold outlines or pure black and white so it shows through thicker paper, and the lock keeps a resting palm from moving it.
How to trace a picture on a tablet
Choose a file, paste one from the clipboard, or start with plain white light.
Fit it to the screen, or calibrate the screen and type the real width; switch to outline if the photo is hard to see through paper.
The picture fills the screen; lay the paper on top, tape it down if you can, and press Lock.
For a large picture, trace the pink crosses as well, then move to the next screen and line its crosses up with your marks.
Put a picture under the paper and trace it at the size you need
📏 Calibrate the screen
Hold any bank card against the screen (they are all 85.6 × 54 mm) and move the slider until the blue card matches it edge to edge.
Measure the striped bar with a ruler from end to end and type its length.
The calibration is shared with the Online Ruler: calibrate once and both tools know your screen. Online Ruler
Then lay the paper on the screen and press Lock: touches stop moving the picture. To unlock, hold the lock in the top-left corner for 2 seconds.

🔒 Lock the screen for tracing
- Touches, scrolling and zoom stop working, so a palm or a pencil cannot move the picture.
- To unlock, hold the lock in the top-left corner for 2 seconds, then tap the ✓ that appears in the middle. A hand resting on the corner will not do both.
- iPhone and iPad: a page cannot block the swipe from the bottom edge. Turn on Guided Access (Settings → Accessibility → Guided Access) and triple-click the side button before you trace.
- Android: to block the back and home gestures, pin the browser (Settings → Security → App pinning).
- Turn the screen brightness all the way up yourself — a web page cannot change it — and switch auto-rotate off.
- This browser cannot keep the screen on. Set auto-lock to Never in the device settings while you trace.
