RPM Measurement Online — Strobe, Sound and Camera
An online replacement for a strobe tachometer: rotation speed is measured five independent ways — by sound, by a marker in the camera, by the gyroscope of a phone lying on top, by screen flashes and by a printable stroboscopic disc. A separate mode measures lamp flicker and PWM backlights from rolling-shutter bands. Every method has a limit, and it is drawn on a coverage ruler instead of hidden in a footnote.
How to measure rotation speed
Type the expected speed and the coverage ruler highlights the methods that reach it. No idea of the order? Start with sound — it covers the widest range.
Turn on the microphone and enter how many blades the fan has or teeth the gear has. For a plain shaft hum, leave 1.
Stick a marker on the rim and keep it in the circle, or simply lay the phone on the spinning object.
Print the disc for your lamp and cut along the circle. No flickering lamp? Point the screen at the disc instead.

RPM by sound
Rotation is almost always audible: a fan sounds at its blade-pass rate, a motor at its shaft rate. The tool breaks the sound into frequencies and looks for the fundamental.
The green line is the fundamental it found, the faint ones its harmonics. Wrong peak? Click the right one straight on the spectrum.
The only method that reaches past a thousand rpm: above that the strobe smears the mark and the camera runs out of frames. If the reading is a multiple of the real speed, correct the events-per-turn count or tap ÷2 and ×2.
RPM by a marker in the camera
Stick a contrasting marker on the rim of the spinning object and keep it inside the circle — the tool counts how often it passes.
For slow rotation: a record, a fan, a drum. The camera shoots 30–60 frames per second and a marker needs several frames to be seen, so the honest ceiling is about 600 rpm. A number appears only after three consistent turns.
Sensor row rate: —
A rolling shutter reads the frame row by row, so flickering light leaves bands on it. A mains lamp flickers exactly 100 or 120 times per second, which gives the sensor's row rate; after that, bands from any source convert to hertz — this is how you check PWM in torches, bulbs and monitor backlights. The phone rides the object
Lay the phone face up on the spinning object — the gyroscope reads angular rate directly. No marker, no darkness, no flickering lamp: for a turntable this is the most accurate method here.
Unevenness and drift are different faults: a worn idler wobbles, a stretched belt sags slowly. Put a cloth under the phone, take the record off and let it run for at least 10 seconds. The gyroscope saturates around 300 rpm — go faster and use sound.

A strobe is a brightly flashing screen. For people with photosensitive epilepsy, flashing at 3–30 Hz can trigger a seizure. Do not start it if you or anyone nearby has ever reacted to flashing light.
Darken the room, point the screen at an object with a single mark and tune the speed with ↑ ↓ while it flashes — the real speed is shown right there.
A freeze repeats at half the true rate. Having found one, double the speed: if the mark freezes again and there is only one, the true speed is twice as high; if two ghost marks appear, you had it right the first time.
Strobe disc for a turntable
The classic vinyl speed check: a marked disc goes on the spindle under a flickering light. At the correct speed the marks stand still.
Light source:
Print scale does not matter to a strobe disc — only the mark count does, so "fit to page" does no harm here. Cut along the outer circle; the centre hole is 7.2 mm for the spindle.
An incandescent or neon mains lamp works. Most LED bulbs run on rectified current and barely flicker — they will not strobe. Pick this screen instead: we choose its flash rate so the mark counts come out whole.
