Color meter that lights the object with the screen

A color the camera reports is the color of the object multiplied by the color of the light falling on it, which is why the same tile photographs orange under a bulb and blue by a window. Instead of modeling the room, this removes it: the screen is a lamp the page controls, so the object is photographed with the screen dark and with it lit, and the difference contains only the screen’s contribution.

How to measure

Turn the screen brightness up

The screen is the lamp, and a dim lamp is a weak measurement. Full brightness, in a room that is not blazing.

Put the object and a white paper in front of the screen

About ten centimeters away, both visible to the front camera. Ordinary printer paper is a good enough white.

Place the circles

Tap for the sample, press and hold for the white. Keep the gray anchor circle on something the screen does not light.

Take the room out of the color you are looking at

Open the camera, put the object and a white paper in the circles, and measure.

How this is measured

Hold the object about ten centimeters from the screen, facing it, with the front camera seeing both the object and a piece of white paper. The screen then flashes black, red, green, blue and white, and the difference between the dark frames and the lit ones is the light the screen put there — and nothing else.

Tap the preview to move the sample circle, press and hold to move the white one. The gray circle in the corner is the anchor: it must be somewhere the screen’s light does not reach, because it is what proves the camera did not adjust itself mid-sequence.

The numbers are reflectance under the screen’s white light, relative to the white reference: 1.00 means as bright as the paper. They are comparable between samples measured the same way, which is what makes "are these two the same color" answerable.
