Tally Counter — Online Click Counter

An online replacement for the mechanical tally counter — the clicker used to count visitors at a door, knitting rows, stadium laps or birds in a survey. The large button works like the clicker drum, counting also runs from the keyboard, and every tap is written to a history with its exact time. Several categories are counted at the same time, with no switching between them.

How to use

Tap the big button

Every tap adds the step — one by default. Space, Enter, plus and the arrow keys work from the keyboard.

Create counters per category

The "+ New" button adds a counter and gives it its own colour. The "All" switch lays them out as tiles so several categories can be counted at once.

Set the step, target and signal

Counting boxes of six? Set the step to 6. A target enables the progress bar, and "Signal every 100" marks each hundred with a sound.

Made a mistake — undo it or set the number

Undo restores the state before the last tap and Redo cancels the undo. "Set number" continues from any value — for instance from the reading on a mechanical clicker.

Take the history with you

CSV hands you every tap with its timestamp; a backup hands you the counters whole, to carry on from another device.

Several categories at the same time

The "All" view lays the counters out as tiles, each with its own button — in and out, adults and children, vehicles by type. From the keyboard, digits 1–9 count straight onto the matching counter, so a species survey never needs your eyes off the subject.

A readout you can see across the room

The count sits in large digits on a dark instrument screen that stays dark in either site theme. Fullscreen mode strips everything else away and keeps the screen from sleeping while a shift runs.

Step, target and an interval signal

Step from 1 to 1000 for counting in packs. A target shows a progress bar, and "Signal every" marks each hundred or each ten with a sound and a vibration — batch counting by ear.

Undo, redo and reset protection

Undo removes the last tap, an accidental reset included, and Redo puts it back. Reset itself takes two presses in a row, so an elbow brush cannot wipe a shift's count.

Pace and a minute-by-minute picture

Tiles show the per-minute pace, today's count and the total, while the chart plots taps per minute over the last 20 minutes — the queue shows up as a shape. The full history exports to CSV for Excel and Google Sheets.

Backup and transfer

The Backup button saves one file with every counter, name, colour and history. It carries the count to another browser or phone and brings it back after browser data is cleared.

Questions and answers

How do I count several categories at once?

Create a counter per category and switch on the "All" view — they line up as tiles, each with its own button. From the keyboard, 1 counts on the first counter, 2 on the second and so on up to nine, so a species or traffic survey needs neither switching nor looking at the screen.

Can I count with the phone's volume buttons?

No — a web page does not receive volume-button presses; browsers reserve them for the system. It is a platform limitation, not a setting. What does work: the big on-screen button, Space, Enter and the arrow keys on a keyboard, and a headset remote if it emulates a keyboard.

Will the count survive closing the tab?

Yes. Values, names, colours and the tap history are saved in your browser and restored the next time the page opens. Another browser or another device keeps its own independent count — a backup file is how you carry the count there.

How do I move the count to another device?

Press "Backup" and a file with every counter and its history is saved. On the other device open this same page, press "Restore" and pick the file. The same route brings the count back after browser data is cleared.

Does the counter go negative?

No. Like a mechanical clicker, the drum does not turn below zero: minus at zero simply does nothing. The Minus button is for corrections — for example, when a visitor leaves.

What goes into the CSV file?

Every event on its own row: ISO timestamp, the change and the value after it. Resets and manually set numbers are recorded too — the file faithfully reproduces the whole history, not just the total. The separator is a semicolon so the file opens in Excel without an import wizard.

What do "per minute" and the chart show?

The tile shows taps in the last 60 seconds expressed as a pace; with no taps in that window it shows a dash rather than a zero. The chart beside it plots taps per minute over the last 20 minutes, so a busy stretch and a quiet one are told apart at a glance.
