Power outage planner: how long food, heat and comms last

An online tool that works out what actually happens in a home during a power and heating outage. It answers four questions from your conditions: when the fridge and freezer leave the safe temperature band, how cold the home gets and how fast, how long a power bank and a water supply last, and — in a block of its own — how dangerous the thing you are about to burn for warmth really is. Official leaflets give one number with no conditions: "a fridge keeps food for four hours". That is true for a 21-degree room with the door shut, and your kitchen might be twelve degrees or thirty, the freezer quarter-full, the door opened six times. The model is calibrated against those official numbers and reproduces them exactly under their stated conditions, then honestly recalculates for yours.

Say what you plan to burn

The first block is about the air. If a gas hob, a kerosene heater, a charcoal grill or a generator is on the list, start here: it is the only decision on this page that kills the same evening.

Describe the fridge

How full the compartments are and how often the door opens. Fullness matters more than the brand: a packed freezer holds twice as long as a half-empty one.

Floor area, outdoor temperature, building type, position — and above all whether the heat is out for everyone or only for you.

The timeline at the bottom is assembled from your numbers. Print it or save it as a PDF: on paper it works without a phone, and phones are rationed during an outage.
