Almost always because of photos: a phone shot is 4000 px and 5–10 MB, while on the slide it fills a frame a third of the screen wide. PowerPoint stores it whole, together with the cropped-off parts if the picture was cropped. The “Heaviest items” list shows such pictures with their slide numbers.

At the “Screen” level a picture keeps a margin for Full HD: 150 ppi as shown is 2000 px across a full slide. For print choose “Print” (220) or “High” (330). Before downloading you can compare slides before and after at 2× and 4× zoom.

Gmail, Yandex and Mail.ru accept attachments up to 25 MB (larger ones go as a cloud link), Outlook 20 MB, iCloud 20 MB for the whole message including encoding, which is about 14 MB of file. A corporate Exchange server lets 10 MB per message through by default — about 7 MB of file. The “File size” targets keep a margin under these numbers.

H.264 videos (MP4, MOV) are re-encoded to 1080p, 720p or 480p depending on the level, and their soundtrack stays. WMV, AVI and other formats cannot be re-encoded in the browser — keep them or replace them with a poster frame.

Only how the file is stored: it removes duplicates of the same picture, hidden cropped areas of PNGs and effect data, and packs PNGs tighter. It saves less than reducing resolution, but the pictures stay the same.

Office 2007 and newer files are compressed: .pptx, .docx, .xlsx and their macro-enabled and template variants. Open an old .ppt or .doc in Office and save it in the new format; with Premium such a file is converted on our server and lands here automatically.
