What it does

The threshold is measured, not guessed

Four things are checked on every file: overall structure, the worst region of the frame, colour bleeding on sharp edges, and banding on gradients. Any single number would miss three of them.

Compress to an exact size

Ask for 200 KB or 1 MB and quality is searched, then resolution if quality alone cannot get there. The budget is spent almost in full rather than half wasted.

Format follows the content

Screenshots and logos go to a lossless PNG palette, photographs to JPEG or WebP. Transparency is never quietly filled in with a background.

Never returns a bigger file

If re-encoding does not help, the original comes back and the report says why.

Compare on the worst region

The before/after slider opens on the hardest part of the frame, not a flattering one. A difference map and zoom up to 16× are included.

What does "without quality loss" mean here?

Two things. For PNG screenshots and logos the tool uses compression that does not change a single pixel — mathematically lossless. For photographs it finds the smallest file whose measured differences stay under the visibility threshold, and the report shows the actual numbers it reached.

How do I compress a photo to 200 KB?

Switch to "Fit a size" and enter 200 KB. Quality is searched first, and if quality alone cannot reach the target, resolution follows. The result aims to use nearly the whole budget instead of handing back a file three times smaller than requested.

Which formats are supported?

In: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC and HEIF from iPhone, GIF and BMP. Out: JPG, PNG and WebP, plus AVIF in browsers that genuinely encode it.

Why did the size barely change?

The file was probably already compressed. Re-encoding such a file at high quality usually makes it larger, so the original is returned instead. If you need it smaller, lower the quality target or set a size directly.

Will the photo stay upright?

Yes. EXIF rotation is applied to the pixels themselves, so the picture is upright even where metadata is ignored. That also removes the old problem where stripping metadata laid portrait photos on their side.

What happens to metadata?

It is removed by default: on a phone photo that is usually tens of kilobytes including an embedded preview, a real share of the final file. Tick "Keep metadata" to carry EXIF and the colour profile into the result.
