FAQ

Which AI model do you use?

Real-ESRGAN ×4 (fp32, 65 MB ONNX). The same model used in the dedicated /video-upscaler tool — proven for recovering detail in low-resolution photos.

Why is WebGPU required?

Real-ESRGAN inference on CPU/WASM produces all-zero outputs (a black image). It needs a GPU backend, and WebGPU is the only browser GPU API that works reliably across vendors. Without WebGPU you can still use the Enhance pass (sharpen / contrast / saturation).

How long does ×4 upscale take?

A 1080p photo upscales to 4K in 5–20 seconds on a modern laptop with a discrete GPU. Mobile devices with integrated GPUs may take 30–60 seconds.

What is the difference between AI upscale and Enhance?

AI upscale increases the resolution by 2× or 4× using a neural network trained on millions of photos. Enhance is a classic sharpen + contrast + saturation pass — useful at any scale, including ×1 (no upscale).

Can I use it on mobile?

Yes. The tool detects WebGPU support — if your phone supports it (recent Chrome/Edge on Android), AI upscale works. Otherwise the Enhance pass is available.

What about HEIC photos from iPhone?

HEIC is not natively decodable by most browsers. Convert your HEIC photo to JPEG first using our /heic-converter tool, then enhance.
