Photo Filters: Film, Black & White and Retro

Desaturating removes color and nothing else. An emulsion has character: reportage 400 has springy contrast and visible grain, soft 125 has smooth midtones, pushed 3200 has coarse grain and blocked shadows, chrome is smooth and dense. Color stocks differ the same way: portrait film lifts the shadows and mutes greens, slide film saturates and hardens contrast, tungsten pulls shadows to teal and draws red halos around light.

Halation is the red-orange halo around bright sources: light passes through the emulsion, bounces off the base and exposes the neighboring area in the red layer. That is how film without an anti-halation layer shoots, 800T for one. Bloom is neutral, wider and softer — scatter in the glass, not in the film. Both are computed from the frame's highlights, so a photo without bright points barely shows them.

From the EXIF tag DateTimeOriginal — the date the frame was taken, not the date the file was saved. When the tag is missing (a screenshot, a picture from a messenger), the file date is used and the field says so. Any date can be corrected by hand, and the print style chosen: '98 12 25, 25.12.1998 or 1998.12.25.

The preview is scaled down to the screen, while grain and halation are drawn at frame scale — on a large photo they are finer relative to the picture. The 1:1 button opens a loupe at the real export resolution: what is in it is in the file, because the preview, the loupe and the export are computed by one code path.

Yes, with "Keep EXIF" on: the block with the camera, lens and capture date is carried into JPG, PNG and WebP. Orientation is reset to "as is", because the pixels are already upright — otherwise a viewer would rotate the photo a second time. AVIF is written without EXIF.

Yes — a .cube file with a cube of up to 64 points per edge (33 is the norm). The LUT is applied after the chosen look and before the palette, its strength has its own slider, and "Original" plus a LUT gives a clean grade with none of our preset in it.
