5.1 Surround Disc Image for Home Theatre

Online tool for preparing surround audio for playback on hardware. It builds a DVD-Video structure with one chapter per track — a disc like that starts by itself in a set-top player, and the remote switches tracks. It also produces standalone formats: AC-3 in an MKV container, a plain AC-3 file, multichannel FLAC, a DTS track with a CUE sheet, and an ISO disc image. It accepts a ready multichannel file, separate per-channel files, or a stereo recording, which it spreads into 5.1.

How to build a surround disc

A real DVD-Video disc
The tool builds the whole disc: IFO and BUP files, navigation packs, a chapter per track and the UDF filesystem. The image is burned as it is, and the disc starts by itself in a player — the remote switches tracks, scanning and time search work.
Six output formats
A DVD-Video disc, AC-3 in an MKV container, a bare AC-3 file, multichannel FLAC, a DTS track with a CUE sheet, and an ISO 9660 disc image.
Picture and titles on screen
Every track gets a card with its number and title, and cover art can be added. The text stays 10% clear of the edge so a TV's overscan cannot crop it.
A whole album on one disc
Drop the entire album and each file becomes its own track with a mark to skip to. If the files are the channels of one recording instead, switch the reading and assign the speakers: the filenames are guessed for you and every file can be auditioned before building.
Checked before you burn
The tool decodes its own output and reports the layout, the level of every channel, the sample rate and the duration — a mistake shows up before a blank disc is wasted.
Stereo spread into 5.1
A stereo recording is spread with the same matrix the channel converter uses: the bass channel is written 10 dB lower, the way studio masters are authored.

Will the browser burn the disc itself?

No, a browser has no access to the optical drive. The tool hands you a file or an image, and your burning program writes it — ImgBurn, Nero, Brasero, K3b or the tool built into your system.

Which format is most likely to play?

Start with AC-3 in an MKV container: most players of the last decade read it from a USB stick and from a disc. The DTS track is for people who have a receiver with a DTS decoder and a digital output on the player.

Why does the DTS disc produce noise?

The stream did not reach a decoder: either the system has no DTS decoder, or the player altered the data with a volume control, an equaliser or a resampler. Set the player to maximum volume, switch off sound processing, and connect the digital output to the receiver. If noise remains, try the alternative file with the opposite byte order.

What is the difference between the 14-bit and 16-bit DTS profiles?

They occupy the same disc capacity. In the 14-bit profile the top two bits of each sample carry no data, so on gear without a decoder the noise is roughly 12 dB quieter — this is how factory-pressed discs are made. The 16-bit profile gives the stream the whole bandwidth.

Does the burning program still have to finish the disc?

No. The UDF filesystem DVD-Video requires is built here, so what you get is a finished .iso that is burned as it is in ImgBurn, Nero, Brasero, K3b or the Windows built-in tool. If you want the VIDEO_TS folder itself, the second button hands over the archive.

Will there be a menu on the disc?

No, and that is deliberate: the disc goes straight into the first track, and the tracks are laid out as chapters, so the remote is all you need to move between them. A menu on a music disc adds a screen and gives nothing back.

PAL or NTSC?

PAL for Europe and much of Asia, NTSC for the United States, Canada, Japan and Korea. The audio does not change; only the picture standard differs. A multi-standard player takes either — when in doubt, pick the standard of your region.
