One per frame of the stretch you extract, which is more than people expect: a thirty-second clip at 30 frames a second is 900 images, and as PNG that can run to several gigabytes. So the interval is the setting that matters. Every frame is what you want when you are looking for the one moment a bird's wings were open; one every second is what you want for a contact sheet of a long recording; and one every ten is enough to see how a scene changed. JPEG rather than PNG cuts the size by roughly a factor of ten and is the right choice unless you are going to edit the frames further, where PNG keeps the edges clean.

Frame rate times duration, which is a bigger number than most people expect: a two-minute clip at 30 fps is 3,600 images. That is why the extraction modes exist — every frame when you genuinely need every frame, a custom frame rate when one per second is enough, every Nth frame, a time range, or frames you pick by hand. Deciding that before you start is the difference between a tidy folder and a four-thousand-file archive.

PNG when the frames are going into further work — it is lossless, so nothing is added that was not in the video, at the cost of files several times larger. JPG when you need to look through them or send them: much smaller, with compression artefacts on top of whatever the video already had. WebP sits between the two and is the sensible default when the frames are for the web.

It depends on video length and FPS. A 10-second video at 30 fps produces 300 frames. The estimate is shown before extraction.

Set a time range and only that stretch is walked — the rest of the video is never decoded, which is why a five-second selection out of an hour finishes almost at once. Two other modes narrow it further: every Nth frame thins a long passage down to something you can actually look through, and manual selection lets you step to a moment and take exactly that one frame.
