Projector HDR Test — PQ EOTF, clipping and gamut
No projector reaches the thousands of nits an HDR master is graded for, so every HDR projector tone-maps — it squeezes bright highlights into the light it can actually produce, and how gracefully it does that decides whether explosions and skies look detailed or blown to flat white. This suite probes that behaviour with PQ-encoded patterns built on the SMPTE ST 2084 curve: a nit-step ramp from 0.05 to 10,000 nits, a highlight-clipping sweep to find the exact level where bright steps stop separating, a near-black series for shadow detail, a 1000-nit peak-white reference and a Rec.709 versus Rec.2020 gamut comparison. Because browsers output an SDR signal, treat the results as a target for your projector's code-value response rather than an absolute-brightness calibration.
How to use
Browsers do not send true HDR signalling, so manually select the projector's HDR or wide-gamut picture mode if it has one.
All twelve nit steps should be visibly separate. Where the top steps blend into one shade is where your projector clips.
On the 800–1500 nit sweep, note the level where brighter blocks stop getting brighter, then trim output or contrast if highlights look blown.
In a dark room the near-black steps should separate down low. If only the brightest step shows, lift black level or gamma slightly.
