Frequently Asked Questions

What does an audio compressor do?

A dynamics compressor reduces the difference between the loudest and quietest parts of your audio. It turns down peaks above a threshold by a set ratio, so the overall level is more even — voices sit forward and stay intelligible, and vocals or music feel more controlled and consistent.

How is this different from a file compressor?

This is a dynamics compressor — an audio effect that evens out loudness. It is not a file-size compressor. The file may end up a similar size; what changes is how even the sound is. If you want a smaller file, use an audio or MP3 converter instead.

What settings should I use for a podcast or voice?

Start with the Podcast preset: a 3:1 ratio, a soft knee and a moderate attack and release that even out delivery without pumping. Thresholds auto-calibrate to your recording’s level. For very uneven interviews, try the Leveler preset, which also lifts quiet passages.

What is the gain-reduction meter showing?

Gain reduction is how many decibels the compressor is turning the signal down at any instant. The amber meter shows this in real time. A few dB of reduction on peaks is typical for spoken voice; heavy leveling for broadcast can reach 6–12 dB.

Will compression make my audio louder?

Only if you ask it to. By default the output is matched to your original loudness, so you hear the effect of compression without a volume change — that keeps the A/B comparison fair. Switch to a LUFS target (for example −16 LUFS for podcasts) or manual makeup gain to make it louder, always capped at −1 dBTP so it will not clip.

What formats can I export?

MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG and M4A. WAV and FLAC are lossless for studio-quality output; MP3 and M4A are smaller for sharing. Processing runs in your browser via WebAssembly and the Web Audio API.
