Solar and lunar eclipses — times and path of visibility

This tool answers the main question about an eclipse: will it be visible where you are, and at what time. For solar eclipses it shows the path on a map and the times of first contact, the start and end of totality, maximum and last contact — with the Sun's altitude and compass direction at each moment. For lunar eclipses it gives all six contacts, from entering the penumbra to leaving it. You can play the eclipse as a picture drawn for your own location, and the list of upcoming events shows at a glance which ones reach you.

How to use it

Set your location

Pick a city or tap "Use my location". You can also simply tap the map — every time and altitude is recomputed for that point.

Look at the path

The orange band shows where the eclipse is total or annular. If your marker is outside it, the Sun will only be partly covered — by how much is stated in the panel beside it.

Play it through

The slider under the picture runs from first contact to last. You can see which side the Moon comes from and how deeply the disc is covered.

Check the times, pick another event

Contacts are given in the time zone of your point. The list below holds upcoming eclipses of both kinds with visibility marks; clicking a row recomputes everything for it.

Upcoming eclipses

Ephemerides — astronomy-engine (checked against JPL ephemerides). The path is built by intersecting the cone of the Moon's shadow with the Earth ellipsoid: its width agrees with published figures to within a few kilometres. Everything is computed in your browser.
