Guitar course for beginners

An online course for people picking up a guitar for the first time: from posture and tuning to barre chords, whole songs and a first improvised solo. You play, and the course listens through your phone or laptop microphone — it tells you whether a chord rings, which string is muted and whether your strum lands on the metronome’s beat.

How to take the course

3 steps
1
Put your phone next to the guitar

About a foot and a half away, in a quiet room. Allow the microphone when the course asks.

2
Take the lessons in order

A lesson is 8–12 minutes: a little theory, then you play. The course counts what it hears.

3
Come back every day

10–15 minutes a day plus scheduled “Review” build finger memory faster than long, rare sessions.

Stage 1

Meet the guitar

Know your guitar, sit with it right, tune it by ear-and-meter, play your first notes and your first chord in time.

Stage 2

First chords

Play Am, E, A and D cleanly, hear the difference between major and minor and fix a buzzing string yourself.

Stage 3

Chord changes and time

Count beats, keep time with the click and change chords on the beat — your first full blues.

Stage 4

Strumming and picking

Keep the strumming hand moving like a pendulum, play the basic folk strum and syncopation, finger-pick an arpeggio and play a waltz.

Stage 5

All the open chords

Add C, G, Dm, an easy F and the seventh chords, and understand which chords belong together in a key.

Stage 6

Barre chords

Play a barre without pain and without dead strings, then move one shape to get any chord.

Stage 7

Songs

Play three traditional songs from start to finish: a march, a hymn in 3/4 and a picked ballad.

Stage 8

Pentatonic and improvisation

Learn the A minor pentatonic box, play your first phrases and improvise over a blues.
