Musical ear trainer: intervals, chords and perfect pitch

An online tool for musical ear training: an interval trainer, major-or-minor and chord recognition, and a perfect pitch test. Every question is played on the piano, a round has ten questions, and after a mistake you can hear your own answer next to the right one, just like in a music theory class but at your own pace.

FAQ

Why does each interval play twice?

First the notes are played one after the other, then together. A melodic interval is easier to recognize by the movement of the melody, a harmonic one by the color of the sound, and music theory classes train both, so every question has both. Chords work the same way: first an arpeggio, then the whole chord.

How can I check whether I have perfect pitch?

Open Which note? at the All 12 notes level: notes are played in three octaves with no reference tone. If you name 9 or 10 notes out of 10 with confidence, that looks like perfect pitch. Random guessing gets about one note in twelve right, or one in seven on the white keys.

How is this different from the Ear Trainer on this site?

The Ear Trainer teaches you to hear frequencies, that is, which equalizer band was boosted in a recording; it is made for sound engineers. This one trains the musical ear: intervals, chords and notes, as in music theory class.

Which intervals should I learn first?

Start with the Easy level: the major third, perfect fifth and octave sound very different. When you finish a round without mistakes, move on to Medium and All 12; each level adds intervals that are easy to confuse with their neighbors.

Can I train without looking at the screen?

Yes, with a screen reader. Every button has a text label, Space replays the question, the number keys 1–9 pick an answer and Enter goes to the next one. The verdict after each answer and the score at the end of the round are announced, so you never need to look.
