How the eraser rebuilds the background

Two different algorithms work behind the erased area, because a background is two different things. Lines, edges and smooth transitions are continued by a diffusion method: it marches inward from the edge of the selection and follows the direction of the nearest gradients — which is how a horizon, the edge of a wall or the transition from sky to water comes back. Texture — grass, gravel, water, fabric, skin — is something diffusion can only average, so a synthesis pass rebuilds it: the area is assembled out of real pieces of this same photo, taken next to the hole and fitted to each other with overlap. The result takes the coarse detail from the first method and the fine detail from the second, so what stands where the object was is texture rather than a smooth patch. It works best on an even background; the hardest case is a large object on a detailed one, where small steps and the clone stamp help.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from background removal?

Background removal cuts out the whole foreground and leaves a transparent or replaced background. This eraser removes one chosen object and rebuilds the real background behind it, leaving the rest of the frame alone.

Why does a large object sometimes leave a smooth patch?

The eraser assembles the background out of what is visible around the hole; it does not invent what is not in the frame. If the object covered half a face or a complicated building, there is nowhere to recover it from. Remove such objects in parts and tidy up with the clone stamp.

Do I have to select the shadow and the reflection too?

Yes. The selection is what gets replaced, and a shadow or reflection stays behind as a separate mark. Include them with the object, or the person will vanish and their shadow will not.

What should I do when the background behind the object is too complex?

Use the clone stamp: Alt+click picks a source patch, then you paint over the problem area and pixels are copied from there at a fixed offset. That is how brickwork, tiling and other patterns an algorithm cannot guess get covered.

Why does the object disappear without pressing a button?

A finished stroke is the instruction — that is how every editor of this class behaves. If you would rather build a selection out of several strokes, hold Shift and the button does the erasing. The “Erase on release” switch turns the behavior off for good.

Can I remove a watermark from someone else’s photo?

The tool is not meant for that. Removing a watermark from someone else’s work infringes the copyright of the person who owns the shot, and in many countries also breaks the law on circumventing technical protection. Use it on photos that are yours.
