Projector Gamma Calibration Test

This tool checks how your projector maps signal level to brightness — its gamma, or transfer curve. A field of one-pixel black-and-white stripes optically averages to exactly 50% light output, so it sits next to a solid grey computed for a target gamma. When the two halves merge, your projector is tracking that curve; when the stripes look lighter or darker than the patch, the curve is wrong and mid-tones are being lifted or crushed. Four references are provided: 1.8 (legacy Mac), 2.2 (sRGB and general viewing), 2.4 (Rec.709 in a dim room) and BT.1886, the HDTV reference that bends toward your panel's real black floor.

How to verify gamma

Start at γ 2.2

The default for most rooms and streaming content. Project it full-screen and let your eyes settle for a moment.

Step back and squint

From a few metres the stripes should dissolve into a flat grey that is impossible to tell apart from the solid half.

Read the mismatch

Stripes look lighter? Gamma is too low — drop the projector's gamma or brightness. Darker? Gamma is too high — raise it.

Confirm at 2.4 / BT.1886

In a fully darkened room re-check against 2.4 or BT.1886, which most calibrators prefer for cinema viewing.

Read your projector's tone curve from the 50% blend point

Squint slightly. The alternating-stripes half blurs to a perceptual mid-grey. If your projector's gamma matches, that grey blends with the solid reference. If the stripes look brighter — gamma is too low. Darker — too high.
