Yes. Apple Watch uses the same principle — a 165 Hz tone to eject water after swimming. Sound waves create vibrations in the speaker membrane that physically push water out and shake dust loose.

Not at the level a phone can produce through its own tiny driver — the limit here is physical rather than a setting. What the tone does is move the cone hard enough to push a water droplet out of the grille, and the two things that actually matter are that you play it with the phone face down or on its side so gravity helps, and that you stop once no more water appears. Running it for minutes after the speaker is dry achieves nothing and is simply loud. If the sound is still muffled afterwards, the water is behind the driver rather than in front of it, and no tone reaches that.

Run it right after the water goes in — the first minutes are when a droplet is still loose in the grille and can be pushed back out. After a day it has usually spread, and what is left is the residue rather than the water, which no tone shifts. It is worth nothing at all as a routine: dust in a speaker mesh is not moved by sound, and a speaker that has never been wet has nothing to expel. If the sound went muffled without any water involved, look for lint compacted in the mesh, a case covering the port, or a software equaliser, in that order.

It uses 15–25 kHz frequencies at or above human hearing limits. Most adults can't hear above 16–17 kHz. Silence in this phase is normal: a phone speaker puts out very little up there, so do not count on it — the water is pushed out by the 165 Hz phase. Note: pets may hear them.

Browsers have no direct access to the earpiece — this is an OS restriction, not a website limitation. We added an experimental "Earpiece" mode that uses WebRTC to try routing sound to the top speaker. Measured across our own users it succeeds on roughly a third of devices, about equally on iPhone and on Android. So the tool now plays a short signal the moment you switch, asks whether you can hear it, and puts the main speaker back if you cannot. If the mode does not work, there is a guaranteed physical method: plug in wired headphones and press one earbud firmly against the earpiece grille. Cleaning vibrations will transfer directly to its membrane — often clearing dust and moisture even better than through the speaker itself.
