VIN decoder with check-digit verification

An online tool that reads a vehicle identification number. It shows the country and plant of manufacture, the model year, the serial number, and the result of verifying the check digit — the ninth position, computed from all the others, which breaks when a number is re-stamped. The reading runs in your browser under ISO 3779 and ISO 3780, without consulting any third-party database, and it names both what the number encodes and what it does not.

How to check a VIN

Find the number

A VIN is repeated in several places: on the plate in the driver door aperture, under the windscreen on the driver side, and in the registration documents.

Enter all 17 characters

Spaces and dashes need not be removed. If the letters I, O or Q end up in what you typed, the tool will say so immediately — a real VIN never contains them.

Look at the check digit

If it matches, the number is internally consistent. If not, compare your typing with the plate first: a typo is far more likely than a forgery.

Compare year and country with the papers

A one-year gap between model year and build year is normal. A mismatch of country or manufacturer against the documents is not.

What the VIN reading does

Verifies the check digit

The ninth character is computed from the other sixteen. Changing one character and keeping the sum correct is nearly impossible, which is why a mismatch here is the main sign of a re-stamped number. The tool shows both the computed value and what the number actually holds.

Does not declare European numbers fake

The check digit is mandatory in North America and China. On European, Japanese and Korean manufacturers the ninth character belongs to the descriptive section and must not be verified. Decoders that verify it anyway routinely alarm owners of perfectly good Volkswagens and Toyotas.

Is honest about the year being ambiguous

The year code is cyclic and repeats every thirty years: the same letter means 1988 and 2018 alike. On North American light vehicles the seventh character resolves it; otherwise the tool shows both options rather than picking the convenient one.

Catches a typo before refusing

The letters I, O and Q never appear in a VIN — they were excluded so they would not be confused with 1 and 0. If they turn up in what was typed, the tool says so while you are still typing and offers the corrected number at one press.

Lays the number out visibly

The seventeen characters are split into the manufacturer code, the descriptive section, the check digit, the year, the plant and the serial number — so you can see where in the number each thing sits.

Names what the number does not contain

Mileage, accidents, owners, finance and color are not encoded in a VIN. The tool says so plainly instead of leaving the impression that something was left unsaid.

Why checking a number is not «checking the history»

A whole industry rests on a substitution of terms: «check the VIN» is sold as «learn everything about the car». The number itself encodes rather little, and all of it technical — where and by whom it was built, which model year, which unit off the line, and whether its internal arithmetic adds up. That last part is the real check: the check digit catches a re-stamped number, and it takes a second, costs nothing and sends the number to nobody. Everything else — mileage, accidents, finance — lives in other people databases, and it is more honest to say so than to leave the impression that it somehow follows from seventeen characters.

Questions about decoding a VIN

The tool says the check digit does not match. Is the number forged?

Check your typing first. A typo while copying seventeen characters is far more common than a forgery, and look-alike characters — 5 and S, 8 and B, 2 and Z — are especially easy to confuse. If the number is typed correctly and the country of manufacture requires a check digit, the mismatch is a genuine reason to look closer: forging a number so that the sum still works requires recomputing it, and that is rarely done. But arithmetic alone does not prove that the number belongs to this car — the plates on the body have to be compared too.

Why does it say the check digit is not verified on my Volkswagen?

Because European manufacturers do not reserve the ninth character for a check digit: it belongs to the descriptive section and encodes no sum at all. The requirement is mandatory only in North America and China. Many online decoders verify it for everyone and declare a perfectly good European number invalid — that is their error, and owners go looking for a problem that does not exist.

Why is the year shown as two options?

That is a property of the standard, not an imprecision in the reading. One character is allotted to the model year and its alphabet has thirty values, after which the cycle repeats: «G» means both 1986 and 2016. On North American light vehicles the seventh character resolves it — a digit there means «before 2010», a letter «2010 onwards». For everything else it cannot be resolved from the number itself, and picking one option at random would be a lie.

Can mileage, accidents and previous owners be read from a VIN?

Not from the number itself: seventeen characters simply do not encode that. Services that show such things look the number up in THIRD-PARTY databases — registries, insurers, service histories — and the quality of the answer depends entirely on whether the car ever entered those databases. What is read here is the number alone, and we will not promise somebody else data.

Why are the letters I, O and Q missing from VINs?

They were excluded from the standard precisely because on a plate and in handwriting they are indistinguishable from 1 and 0. It is a rare case of a rule existing for human readability. So if an «O» turns up in a number you typed, it is almost certainly a zero — the tool says so at once and offers the correction.

The tool does not know my manufacturer. Is that a bad sign?

No. Manufacturer codes are issued by national agencies, there are thousands of them, and far from all are published. A code missing from the list says something about the list. The country is still determined from the first character — that part is fixed by the standard and covers every number — and we will not guess a make from a similar prefix: a wrongly named make is more harmful than an unnamed one.
