Late payment penalty calculator: what you owe today and when
An online tool that turns a missed payment into a dated calendar. Give it the kind of debt, the amount and the day the payment was due, and it maps the escalation: when penalty interest starts, when the delinquency reaches your credit report, when the balance is charged off, when it is sold to collectors, when a lawsuit and a judgment become possible, and when wages can be garnished. Every step carries the balance owed on that date, not today's. A separate calculator shows where a partial payment actually goes under the legal payment-allocation order — the answer to the most common question in delinquency, "I keep paying and the balance never moves". It models US consumer debt, IRS tax debt and, as a second jurisdiction, the Russian collection ladder.
How to use it
A card, a personal loan, an auto loan, a medical bill or IRS tax. Each has its own ladder and its own governing rules; there is no single timeline for "debt".
The day the payment was due. Add your APR so interest is modeled, and pick your state so the statute of limitations and garnishment rules are the right ones.
The top block is the only part you can still change: the window to demand validation, to answer a summons, to pay before a fee applies.
Export the dates with reminders, or save the whole breakdown as a PDF so a call with the creditor runs off a document instead of memory.
