Transistor Base Resistor: Switch Calculation

Online tool for sizing the base resistor of a bipolar transistor used as a switch. It derives the minimum base current from the load current and hFE, applies a saturation margin, rounds the value DOWN to the E24 series and reports the resistor power.

How to size a base resistor

1
Set the voltage and the load

The drive voltage (e.g. 5 V from a microcontroller pin) and the collector load current.

2
Enter hFE and the margin

Use the guaranteed minimum hFE from the datasheet; a ×4 margin suits most switches.

3
Take the E24 value

Use the shown rounded-down value — it guarantees saturation.

Pick the value that reliably drives your transistor switch into saturation

Examples:
Base resistor Rb
E24 (rounded down)
Base current with margin
Power in Rb
