Secondary Security Screening Selection — a marker for extra screening. In the barcode it is a single digit in the Selectee Indicator field: 0 normal, 1 enhanced screening, 3 expedited TSA PreCheck. The flag is set by a system, not by an airport officer, and the reasons are usually mundane: a one-way ticket, a cash purchase, a late rebooking. The practical consequence is one — allow an extra 20–30 minutes, because the check is separate and done by hand.

It says where you stand in the order of check-in. When a flight is oversold the airline has to choose who gets bumped, and late check-in is normally one of the criteria: a passenger numbered 3 is safer than one numbered 180. The number guarantees nothing on its own, but it explains why checking in during the first hour is worth the trouble.

The barcode stores the date as a Julian day of year — a number from 1 to 366 — with no year at all. We reconstruct the year: if the pass carries an issue date we take it from there exactly, and if it does not, we pick the year nearest to today and mark the result as inferred. Promising an exact date for an old pass would be untrue.

Yes, and more than it looks. The barcode carries your surname and booking reference, and at several airlines that pair is enough to open the booking: view the itinerary, sometimes change or cancel it. Blurring part of the image does not help — the data lives in the barcode itself and is read whole. If you want to post the photo, cover the barcode.

The operating carrier. The barcode holds both: the airline flying the route and the one that sold the ticket (the marketing carrier). Delays and cancellations are the operating carrier's responsibility, so that is the name on the claim. The seller answers for refunding the fare and its own fees.

Three common reasons. A boarding-pass barcode is PDF417 — very wide and short — so holding the phone upright puts half of it outside the frame: turn the phone sideways. Thermal paper glares under a direct light; step away from the lamp or tilt the pass. And the code has to fill most of the frame: from half a meter away the bars are thinner than one camera pixel and cannot be resolved.

Yes, and usually better than paper: a screen has no glare and the code is perfectly straight. Photographing another phone's screen also works if it is not reflecting and the brightness is turned right up.

Some airlines append a digital signature to the barcode, proving the pass was issued by them and not altered. Only that airline can verify it, because only it holds the key; we merely report that a signature is present.
