With “Fold over the string” selected, each flag has a tab with a dotted line above it: lay the string or ribbon on the dotted line, fold the tab back and glue it down with a glue stick or double-sided tape. With “Two holes” selected, punch them with a hole punch or an awl and weave the string through. Thread the flags in number order: the number is printed on every flag.

Below the banner you'll see the number of flags and sheets and the approximate string length — counting the gaps between flags and some extra at the ends for tying. “Happy Birthday!” with 9 cm flags usually comes to about 2 meters (roughly 7 feet). If you have less wall space, pick a smaller size or split the message into two banners.

Regular office paper works, but heavy 160–200 g/m² paper (roughly 60–75 lb cover stock) holds its shape better and does not show through in a window. For a banner that hangs outdoors or should last, laminate the flags after printing or glue them onto cardboard.

All letters of the message print at the same height, and extra-wide ones like W and M shrink just enough not to run past the edge of the flag. For bigger letters, choose the rectangle or the scallop: they leave more room for a letter than the triangle does.

Letters, digits, exclamation points and question marks each get their own flag. Commas, periods and quotation marks are not needed on a banner and are skipped, while ♥ and ★ turn into heart and star flags. The space between words is a divider flag, which you choose under “Style”.

Yes: add photos under “Photos on flags”. Each photo goes on a flag of its own in a round frame — first into the gaps between words, and any extras at the ends of the banner. Keep the face near the center of the shot: the photo is cropped to a circle.

Yes: choose “Coloring page” — the flags, letters and pattern print as black outlines, and the kids color them in. That doubles as a party activity. For color printing that saves ink, pick the “Pastel” or “Kraft” palette with no pattern.
