ZIP opens on any computer or phone with no extra software, which makes it the right choice when the archive goes to someone else. 7z compresses noticeably harder — on text and documents the gap reaches about 10 percentage points — but unpacking it needs 7-Zip, WinRAR, Keka or our extractor.

Because it measures the outcome. Photos, video and music are already compressed inside their own formats, so packing them again gains fractions of a percent. On a real folder of MP3s and images, maximum compression saved 1% in 64 seconds while Store finished in 1.7 seconds. The advice comes from a sample of your files, compressed on your device.

Your files are never copied into memory as a whole — the archiver reads them as it packs, so the size of the source data is barely limited. The limit comes from the finished archive, which is assembled in browser memory. If memory runs short, split the job across several archives.

It uses AES-256, the same algorithm as desktop 7-Zip. With 7z you can additionally hide the file names so the contents cannot be listed without the password; in ZIP the names are always visible, which is a property of the standard itself. The password is never stored anywhere — if you forget it, the archive cannot be recovered.

The ZIP standard never pinned down how a password is encoded, so a password with Cyrillic or CJK characters set in one program often fails in another. To keep the archive openable everywhere, ZIP passwords are limited to Latin letters, digits and punctuation. If you want a password in your own language, choose the 7z format, which has no such limitation.

Download every part into the same folder and open the first one — the file ending in .001. 7-Zip, WinRAR and our extractor pull in the remaining parts automatically. Do not delete or rename the parts, or the archive cannot be reassembled.

Yes. Modification dates go into the archive as they are, so unpacked files do not look as if they were created at packing time. Nested folder structure is preserved too, and you can switch it off to flatten everything into a single level.
