How to play

Use your computer keyboard

A–L plays white keys C4 to F5, W,E,T,Y,U,O,P play the black sharps. Shift+← Shift+→ shifts the keyboard by an octave.

FAQ

How does it sound this realistic without samples?

The synth uses additive synthesis — 16 sine partials per note tuned with a Steinway inharmonicity model, plus a hammer transient, soundboard resonance, and triple-string chorus. We extracted this engine from our generative piano tool. No samples are downloaded; everything renders in real time via Web Audio API.

Why are some songs in learn mode and not others?

We only bundle melodies in the public domain (mostly pre-1900 composers + verified folk). Modern songs (Yesterday, Imagine, etc.) require licenses we don't hold. Drop your own .mid file to play anything else.

Does the MIDI parser support every .mid file?

It handles format 0 and 1 with tempo and time-signature changes. Format 2 and SMPTE timecode division are not supported (very rare). Files over 2 MB are rejected.

Why are the black keys not coloured by scale?

They are — pick a scale (e.g. Major) and a root (e.g. C), and all in-scale keys get a violet accent. The accent is subtle so it doesn't block you from playing notes outside the scale.

How does the sustain pedal work?

Hold Space on your keyboard, or press CC#64 on your MIDI controller — every key you release while sustain is on keeps sounding. Lift sustain and they all decay naturally.

My MIDI keyboard does not show up — why?

Web MIDI requires an HTTPS connection and a Chromium-based browser (Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave). Firefox needs the dom.webmidi.enabled flag. Safari supports MIDI from version 17 onward.

Is there a way to slow the learning songs down?

Yes — the speed buttons in the transport bar offer 0.5×, 0.75×, 1×, 1.25×. Audio and the falling notes stay in sync because both use a single Web Audio clock.

Can I record longer than a few minutes?

Yes. The recorder uses Opus (WebM) or AAC (M4A) — bitrate is moderate, so a 30-minute take is around 20–30 MB. The MIDI export is much smaller (kilobytes) regardless of length.
