My reader says "file format error". Can that be fixed?

Usually yes. That message almost always means the pointer to the index does not add up: the file was appended to, cut short or re-saved by a broken tool, and every offset moved. The objects themselves are intact, and the index is rebuilt from them.

How is this different from the "repair" the reader itself offers?

The same idea, with two differences: the reader offers it when it feels like it, and never tells you what it found. Here you see the object and page counts, where the document catalog came from and the result of verifying every reference.

Will formatting and fonts survive?

Yes. Only the index changes; the body of the document is carried over byte for byte, so pages, fonts, images and layout remain the very same objects they were.

The document still would not assemble — what now?

The text export remains under the analysis. It works independently of the index, because the text is read straight out of the content streams, and often that is all that was needed.

The file asks for a password. Can you help?

No, and that is deliberate. If the password is asked before opening, the content is locked behind a key — re-indexing closed data is impossible in principle. The tool says so plainly.

Is there a point where a document is too damaged to rebuild?

Yes, and it is not about weight — it is about what survived. A file whose objects are intact but whose index no longer adds up is the easy case, and it is the common one. A download that stopped two thirds of the way through is the hard one: the missing pages were never on your disk, so nothing can conjure them back. The tool reads the file once in full, so the practical ceiling is what the browser tab can hold — several hundred megabytes go through normally on a desktop.
