How is this different from “identify file type” services?

Those read the first few bytes and name a format. Here the format is only the first step: the tool then walks the internal structure of the file, verifies checksums, locates the break point and estimates the share of surviving data. The question “what was this” takes a second; the question “what do I do with it now” is the one the file was brought here for.

It says the file is intact, but it still will not open

Then the damage sits inside the compressed data, where the format keeps no checksums — a structural walk cannot see that. This is why the file is additionally handed to the browser decoder, and the result of that check is shown in its own block. If that one also says “opened”, the problem is most likely in the program or the codec rather than in the file.

What does “67% of the data survived” mean?

The structure of the file states how many bytes it should hold; the actual size is smaller. The ratio between the two is that share. For video and archives the surviving part can usually be extracted; for a compressed image it depends — the closer the break is to the start, the smaller the chance.

The file is called .jpg but the tool says it is an archive

An extension is just part of the name and anyone can change it while the content stays what it was. The verdict is built from the actual bytes. The button under it downloads the same file with the correct extension — the content is not altered at all.

What does the report actually tell me?

Where the file breaks and how much of it is still good — not the verdict "corrupt", which tells you nothing you can act on. A typical answer reads: the structure holds to 12 MB, 67% of the data survives past that point. That is the number that decides what to do next: a break near the very end usually means a repair recovers almost everything, while a break in the first megabyte means the index went with it and only a rescue of the embedded preview is realistic. The format is also decided from the content rather than the extension, including the case where the real start of the file is displaced by junk in front of it.

What should I do if it says the file is empty inside?

That verdict is only given when every sampled region consists of zeros: the file has a size but no content. This is usually the trace of a failing drive — space was reserved for the file but the data never got written. The data has to be looked for on the drive itself; it is not in this file.

Corrupted file diagnosis

A file that stopped opening is almost never broken all the way through. Far more often a small service part is damaged — a header, an index or a table of contents — while the main data lies untouched.
