How do you count the 9th and 40th day after death?

The day of death counts as the first day. So the 9th day falls on the eighth day after death and the 40th on the thirty-ninth. The calculator handles this automatically.

What are parental Saturdays?

They are special days of general commemoration of the dead. Most are movable and are calculated from Pascha: the Universal Meatfare Saturday, the Saturdays of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks of Great Lent, and Trinity Saturday. Radonitsa falls on the Tuesday of St Thomas week.

Why is a day of commemoration sometimes transferred?

If the 9th or 40th day falls within Bright Week (the week of Pascha), church tradition transfers the commemoration — usually to Radonitsa. The calculator shows such a note.

Where do the Pascha dates come from?

The date of Orthodox Pascha is calculated by the Julian paschalion (the Alexandrian computation). Radonitsa and the movable parental Saturdays are derived from it.
