Because swapping the factors does not change the product: 7 × 8 and 8 × 7 are the same fact, and the chart holds each one twice, mirrored across the diagonal. Remove the repeats and 55 different facts remain. Multiplying by 1 and by 10 needs no memorizing either, which leaves 36. The Repeats pattern shades the mirrored half so a child can see it.

First the tables that rest on counting: 1, 2, 5 and 10. Then 3, 4 and 9, which have simple tricks (doubling twice for 4, fingers for 9). The tables of 6, 7 and 8 come last, and by then the swaps have already covered most of them — the table of 7 adds only 7 × 7 and 7 × 8, and the table of 8 only 8 × 8. The Learn tab marks those new facts in each table.

Because it chooses the next question by each fact’s history. A fact answered wrong, or right but after a long pause, weighs more and comes back more often; a mistake returns within two or three questions. A fact answered quickly several times in a row weighs almost nothing. Over days, even well-known facts gradually return, so they are not forgotten.

Knowing a fact by heart means recalling it without counting. The trainer measures the time until the answer STARTS — the first digit typed or the first tap — not until it is submitted, so slow typing does not count against a child. A right answer that starts after more than 3 seconds moves the fact up to Knows, but only fast answers reach Knows fast. And after a mistake the fact stays at Learning for two hours however many right answers follow: remembering an answer you saw a minute ago is short-term memory, so the fact has to be recalled again in the next sitting.

It depends on the country. In the United States, Germany, France, Mexico or Brazil, 7 × 3 is usually read as seven groups of three (3 + 3 + … + 3), while in Russian and Korean schools it means 7 taken three times (7 + 7 + 7). The dot array and the addition in the Learn tab follow the convention of the page language, and the Turn it button shows that both give the same 21.

Choose two-sided printing with the flip edge your printer uses: flip on long edge for most printers, flip on short edge for a calendar-style flip. The back page is mirrored to match, so after cutting each answer sits right behind its example. Without a two-sided printer, choose fold in half: the example and the answer print side by side and the card is folded along the dashed line.
