FAQ

Will the timings and the styling survive the translation?

Yes, and that is the part a general-purpose translator gets wrong. Every timestamp is carried across untouched, line breaks stay where the original put them, and inline tags such as or a position override like {\an8} travel with the line instead of being translated into nonsense. What comes back is the same file with different words in it.

Do I have to tell it what language the file is in?

No — the source language is detected from the text, and you pick only the target out of more than a hundred. Setting the source by hand is worth doing in two cases: a file that mixes languages, where detection has to choose one, and a file of song lyrics or names, where there is too little ordinary prose for the guess to be safe.

The translated file shows garbled characters — why?

That happens with non-UTF-8 subtitles. This tool auto-detects Windows-1251 and Windows-1252 files and always saves the result as UTF-8.
