Nursery Rhyme Sequencing Cards and Story Maps

First an adult reads the whole rhyme, pointing at the cards in order. Then the child “reads” the cards: looks at a picture and recalls its line. Finally, some pictures are covered — in the show this is “Recall the line”: one tap covers a picture, a second tap uncovers it and reads the line aloud. A few short sessions over two or three days are usually enough.

A strip is one row of pictures with arrows — good for a short rhyme or a single verse. A grid (2×2 to 4×4) has numbered cards for a whole poem. Cards are large single pictures with dashed cut lines, 4, 6 or 9 to a sheet, to shuffle and put back in order.

Pictures are matched by a dictionary, not by a neural network: it looks for a word in the line that has a picture — a character, an object, a season. A verb or an abstract word can be read the wrong way. Tap the card: six other options are right there, along with a search of the whole set, your own upload and drawing.

They are Microsoft's Fluent Emoji, published under the MIT license: you may print, hand out and show them; the PDF carries a small credit line for the set at the bottom of each sheet. Your own pictures and photos stay yours.

Up to 40 cards. A grid with more than 16 cards is split evenly over several sheets. For a long poem, set “2 lines per card” — each couplet gets one picture, and a verse fits in one strip.
