Frequently asked questions

Can a photo tell whether a mushroom is edible?

No. The tool names the species and shows the dangerous look-alikes, but edibility must never be decided from a photo: death cap and greenish russulas, water hemlock and edible members of the carrot family can differ only in person — by smell, by the cut, by the base of the stem. If in doubt, do not eat it and show it to someone who knows.

What do "Certain", "Likely" and "Possible" mean?

They are the model's confidence in this particular answer. On our check of 131 photos with a known answer, "Certain" was right 73 times out of 77 and "Likely" 38 out of 46. "Possible" is a guess, and such an answer is checked again by a second, stronger model automatically. For a better answer, shoot the subject up close, in good light and from its telling side — for a mushroom, both the cap and the stem.

Does it recognize people by their face?

No, on purpose. It will describe a person — "a man in a red jacket" — but not name them, famous or not. A name appears only if it is printed in the picture itself, for example on a poster or a stamp.

What if the answer is not precise enough?

Tap "Search with Google Lens" or "Search on Yandex": search by image finds the exact product, place or publication of the picture when it is online. A question with details helps too — for example, "found in a forest in Ohio in August, about three feet tall".

Where does the photo go?

The page scales the picture down to 1568 pixels and redraws it, so the location, date and camera model do not get into the copy it sends. That copy is identified by Claude, a model by Anthropic, and the answer comes back as text. Every service the site sends files to is listed on the "AI providers" page.
