Find Where a Photo Was Taken — GPS and EXIF Online

Only if the photo contains GPS data in its EXIF metadata. Most smartphones embed GPS by default, but social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) strip this data when you upload. Photos from dedicated cameras may not have GPS unless the camera has a built-in GPS module.

Go to the Privacy tab after uploading a photo. You will see all sensitive metadata detected with risk levels. Check what you want to remove and click "Download Clean File" to get a version with no metadata.

Not necessarily, because coordinates hide in more than one place and most tools only look in the first. EXIF is the obvious one. But an editor may have written the position into the XMP packet instead; a HEIC or AVIF keeps its metadata in a different block entirely; and a phone that saved a Motion Photo appended a whole video inside the JPEG, which carries its own location. All four are checked here. If nothing turns up in any of them, the position genuinely is not in the file — usually because the camera had location off, or because a messaging app stripped it on the way.

ELA is a forensic technique that reveals areas of an image that may have been digitally manipulated. It works by re-compressing the image and highlighting differences. Uniform brightness suggests an unedited image, while bright spots may indicate pasted or cloned regions.
