Restoring the date taken after Google Takeout
After an export from Google Photos the dates taken stay in separate json files rather than in the pictures. That is why in any other program the library lines up by the export date. This tool matches the photos with their sidecars and moves the date inside the file, leaving the image alone.
Drop the photos together with their json files. Selecting the whole export folder is easier — the tool works out what belongs to what.
You see how many photos found their sidecar, how many matched by an indirect rule and what was left without a pair.
Press write and take the archive. The date taken ends up in the EXIF, and any program will line the timeline up correctly.
