Compass Error and Deviation Table by Sun and Stars

How to find the error
Coordinates can be pasted in any format; time is taken from the ship's clock with the zone number.
Use the azimuth circle on the compass you are checking, then enter the reading.
The true azimuth is computed for you; for a magnetic compass the deviation is separated out.

Time and true azimuth at rising and setting within the ship's day: when the center of the body is on the true horizon (the classic moment for an amplitude observation) and when the upper limb is on the visible horizon, allowing for height of eye.
Swing the ship through eight headings 45° apart and on each record the data by one of three methods.

Easterly corrections and drift to starboard are positive. When correcting a course the corrections are added; when converting a true course to compass they are subtracted. TC = gyro course + GE; TB = TC + RB (starboard +, port −); track = TC + α.
A supporting calculation, not a replacement for the ship's standard check. Compass error is determined and recorded following the ship's own procedure; course decisions are made by the officer of the watch using the ship's instruments.
