COLREG Lights and Shapes: Trainer and Reference
An online trainer for the lights, shapes and sound signals of vessels under COLREG-72. It does not draw a diagram of every light; it draws the view from where you stand, showing only the lights whose sectors cover you — plus an exam, collision-avoidance problems and identification by sound in fog.
How to practice
Identification, heading, crossing or sound.
Keys 1–4 on the keyboard are faster than the mouse.
What was visible, why, and which rule applies.
Identify vessels by their lights from any aspect — the way they look from the bridge

Questions
The silhouette is off on purpose: with it, the answer is read from the hull shape rather than from the lights.
20 questions of different types. Answers are not revealed until the end, and you can move back and forth between questions. The pass mark is 90% correct.
Printable cards for all 29 configurations: night view, day shapes, fog signal and rule.
Preparing a question…
Turn the vessel with a finger or the mouse; use the wheel to zoom in and out.
Plan view: light sectors are shaded, the dot is you.
Rules 34 and 35 as sound. A short blast lasts about one second, a prolonged blast four to six seconds. The sound is synthesized.
Whistle pitch is set by Annex III and depends on vessel length: low for a vessel over 200 meters, high for a small one. In fog it is the only clue to size.
A trainer and a reference, not a source of the rules. The text of COLREG-72 and the official publications remain the only source; the configurations here are reduced to typical cases, and some variations permitted by the Rules are not shown. Not for use as a navigational publication.
