Why spaced repetition works
A word is not forgotten evenly but along a curve: memory fades quickly just after you meet it, then more and more slowly. The point of spaced repetition is to show the card at the moment you are about to forget it — that is when one review buys the most durability. FSRS models each card with a stability and a difficulty and picks that moment individually, so easy words move months ahead while hard ones come back tomorrow.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the transcription and the level come from?
From data this site already ships: the transcription comes from the CMU pronouncing dictionary (sharded by first letter, so only the part you need is fetched), the level from the CEFR-J and Octanove profiles, and the frequency rank from SUBTLEX. All of it is resolved inside the page, so it appears instantly and in any browser.
Why is the translation not filled in automatically?
It is offered, if your browser can translate on the device — but as a suggestion you tap, not as a finished answer. Measured against 46 glosses written by a person: a bare word has no context to disambiguate it, and machine translation gets the sense wrong often enough to matter — "advocate" comes back as the noun on a verb card, "resilient" as "elastic". A wrong translation inside spaced repetition is worse than a missing one, because the schedule will drill exactly that.
Is there a limit on how many words I can keep?
No. Neither on the number of words nor on how many you review in a day. An account is only needed for the list to follow you between devices, which is a separate Premium capability.
How is this different from Anki?
Anki is a program you install and configure, and FSRS there still has to be switched on by hand. Here you open a page, the schedule is already FSRS, and the card fills itself. Your list exports to an .apkg deck with its intervals at any time, so continuing in Anki costs you nothing.
What is FSRS?
The Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler — an open algorithm that models memory with two quantities: stability (how many days a word will hold) and difficulty. Fitted on hundreds of millions of reviews, it predicts the moment of forgetting more accurately than the old SM-2 formula and saves 20–30% of reviews at the same retention.
Can I use it for a language other than English?
Yes — add words in any language and the card and the schedule work the same. The CEFR level, transcription and pronunciation are filled in for English words.
What happens if I skip a week?
Nothing is lost: overdue cards simply wait and join the queue on your next visit. The daily ceiling on new words keeps the queue from collapsing on you at once, and the week's forecast shows what is coming.
What does the "hard" mark on a card mean?
That you have forgotten this word eight times. Usually the fault is in the card rather than in your memory: two different senses on one side, or a translation that never quite fitted. The tool only flags such cards and collects them in a filter — it will not hide your word behind your back.
