Body Mass Index and Healthy Weight for Your Height

An online body mass index calculator: it works out BMI from height and weight and shows the healthy weight for your own height — in pounds, kilograms or stone. For children and teens from 2 to 18, it judges BMI by WHO percentiles for age and sex, and during pregnancy it shows the recommended weight gain. Waist-to-height ratio covers what BMI can’t see.

How to use it

4 steps
1
Choose who it is for

An adult or a child under 19: for children you’ll also need age and sex.

2
Enter height and weight

In whatever units you use — the switch sits next to each field. Results update as you type.

3
Read the answer on the scale

At the top is the healthy weight for your height; the scale shows where you are now and where the category limits fall.

4
Add your waist

One tape measurement gives a second number — about belly fat, which BMI can’t see.

Waist and height — what BMI can’t see

cm
Measure after breathing out, at the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button. Keep the tape level and don’t pull your stomach in.
Enter your waist to get a second number. It shows where fat sits, and the fat inside the belly is the kind that carries the risk.
This number is not a judgment of a person and not a diagnosis. It is one measure among many and decides nothing by itself. If your weight worries you, or thoughts about food take up more room than you’d like, a talk with a doctor helps more than any calculator.
BMI can’t tell muscle from fat and knows nothing about where the fat sits. That is why waist-to-height is right next to it.
